The missiles were capable of hitting within 10-20 miles of the closest US military base. The announcement came after 10 days of exercises in the Gulf, which included a test of shutting down the Strait of Hormuz, and a claim the country had created its first nuclear fuel rod. A small but critical passageway, the Strait is used to transport over 40 percent of the world’s oil supply. Iran has threatened to close the Strait if sanctions are placed on its nuclear program.
